Last week we gave you the chance to ask the two drivers, Richmond and Spencer, questions about the Cats and driving in Antarctica. Now you can put your questions to Ice Team Leader, Brian Newham. Brian has spent over 20 seasons working in Antarctica and is one of the most experienced polar professionals around. If there’s anything you have wanted to know about The Coldest Journey, Brian is your man.

Like last week, we will only put the three most LIKED questions to Brian – we would like to ask them more, but they are kind of busy down there right now. Please read other people’s posts and LIKE the ones you find interesting, as well as your own!

Brian, Presumably your previous seasons in Antarctica were as jobs of work with the British Antarctic Survey on their various permanent bases. TCJ is quite different and I’d be very interested to know what went through your mind when you offered yourself as a volunteer!

Hi Brian,

A video of the detailed use of the ground penetrating radar system
would be very interesting. It could show how it’s pulled, and the view
of the screen live as the train is in motion. What proportion of the
journey is the system used? If pulled by a skier, what is the coldest
temperature that a person could be out there?

How many more days of “sunlight” do you expect. ? and how long can you leave your face masks off befor being frost bitten?

Navigation is by GPS for the basic route. After you pass the previously travelled route into “unknown” territory and in near total darkness, how do you assess the immediate route for obstructions, crevasses, etc?

The coldest journey is very enviromental friendly, what happens to the extra pods you are picking up at the depot when they are emptied? Do you have to carry them all the way across Antarctica or do you drop them off at the South pole station for them to transport out of the continent?

What 3 things do you miss most about home? You are all amazing, an inspiration to us all, I’m enjoying your blog, all the pictures and posts, only wish I was with you! Take care and look after yourselves and come home safe.
