Interested to know what SOG average relates to? Per 24 hr period or hrs under way? Is scale on satellite image in statute or nautical miles? As one degree of latitude (60 mins) represents 60 n.m., you have covered about 75 statute miles. How does that compare with predictions? Have you scheduled a point (in degrees South or distance covered) of no return? How long are night stops and do you stagger drivers, to a rota? Lots of questions but it’s all fascinating!

Hello March, Thank you for your questions. SOG – isn’t this ‘speed over the ground – and averaged over 24 hrs? I’d guess the scale will be for statute miles – we aren’t at sea! I doubt whether there are any fixed predictions – this is the First attempt, and timescales will be variable, depending on conditions and terrain. The safety of the team is paramount, coming before all else. Night stops – the 2 drivers (Spencer and Richmond) will be driving through darkness ever more frequently now as daylight hours are becoming very much shorter. They will continue to keep to specific day-time and night-time routines as much as they possible can – again depending on weather, terrain, tasks in hand as well as intentions. I don’t exactly know but I’m guessing that it means thin ice and you can see blue water under-neath so it looks blue.

Hello Raphael, Thank you for your question! Blue ice is formed in glaciers, it’s very hard. You’ll find more info at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) website, also a brief description online in wikipedia. Just put ‘blue ice’/’glaciers’/ and even ‘Antarctica’ into google – you’ll find lots of interesting things! Have you looked at the FAQ, and other pages on this website too? Satellite reveals no movement since yesterday. When was the blue ice crossed? Do you travel as a pair? Yellow blob 25 miles south of current position on yellow brick road assumed to be depot. Is it not?
